Le cimetière de guerre américain

After our visit to the beautiful Mont St Michel this morning and learning of its history fron the 8th century onwards, this afternoon we turned our attention to 20th century history when we visited the American War Cemetery. Over 4000 American servicemen, who fought in WWII to help liberate Europe, are buried here. We had an extremely informative tour and discovered many of the poignant stories behind the names on the headstones: brothers buried side by side; men who had died on their 25th and final mission before they would have been sent home; and an entire crew of a fighter plane who had all died and been buried together. It was very sobering and reflective.
