Using and Applying Maths
We have been attending courses this year, led by Micky Harcourt-Heath and Simon Davis, on developing mathematics in primary schools, with a focus on using and applying mathematics throughout the curriculum.
The National Primary Strategy maintains a focus on raising standards and improving the quality of teaching and learning in mathematics. Teaching and learning through using and applying and problem solving can be great fun for the children, so we created a three-week plan which incorporated activities in the run-up to O.T.T Week. Here are some photographs of Puffin Class making Gingerbread Yetis. They had to solve the problem of making a recipe for one yeti stretch to two, four or even eight yetis by doubling and doubling and even doubling quantities again.
Then they had to get busy weighing all the ingredients; The counting didn’t stop there…they then had to work out what to charge for each Gingerbread Yeti, and how much money they would collect if they sold them all. Best of all was adding up the profits from an exhausting week!
