Curriculum Vision Statement for Languages

Why learn a foreign language?

Learning a foreign language is part of the National Curriculum and provides an opening to other cultures. We aim to foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world, providing the foundation for learning other languages, equipping them with skills to communicate with other language speakers for study or work purposes or living/ working in other countries.

At Brundall, we teach initially through speaking and listening activities, especially games and songs, before using and applying their skills to the written word, ensuring development of an appropriate balance of spoken and written language.

We learn French – this enables the pupils to make substantial progress in one language, however, where appropriate, we incorporate links to countries and languages relevant to our pupils. Acknowledging this reflects the values and ethos of our school.
